How long will it take?
It depends on the complexity of the project. Straightforward text only books are likely to take 4-6 weeks depending on proofreading time. Nonfiction titles can take much longer. You would get a timeline once I've assessed your requirements and I'd do my best to accommodate a particular publication date.
What is the investment?
What payment options do you provide?
Terms are generally 20% upon signing the contract to secure a slot on my schedule, 20% at the start of the agreed schedule, and the balance on delivery of the final files. You can pay by direct bank transfer or credit card.
What would I need to provide before we can start?
I will need your edited script (ideally as a Word file, with any editorial tracked changes accepted so that it's clean), any images that you want to include and, if also doing a cover, a brief for your book cover. Full details about requirements for images and cover briefs will be given. Assuming you have your own ISBNs, I'll also need to know which number you have allocated for each edition.
Why do I need an ISBN (International Standard Book Number)?
Having your own ISBN is what I usually recommend unless you are working with a reputable hybrid publisher. An ISBN is a book's unique identifier and it helps distributors, libraries and retailers to find your book and categorise it correctly. Purchase your ISBNs through Nielsen in the UK or Bowker in the US. For other countries, check the International ISBN Agency for your location.
Having your own ISBNs allows you to retain control over the sale and distribution of your book. If you get so-called 'free' ISBNs, the company you get it from becomes the publisher. With Nielsen and Bowker, it's more economic to buy a block of 10 ISBNs as you will need separate numbers for each edition and format of your book. For example, if you wish to publish a paperback, an epub and an audio book edition of your book, you will need to allocate three numbers. All printed books that are to be sold, whether online or in shops, must have an ISBN.
If you plan to write and publish more than one book, it is definitely worth having your own block of ISBNs. The unallocated ones do not expire and can be assigned to future books, whether new titles or revised editions.
What is the difference between the types of layout?
Essentially it's the level of complexity. Straightforward text only books (such as fiction or memoirs) are quicker to typeset than books that include images, tables, pull quotes, footnotes or endnotes. Complex books would include multiple design elements that need to be created (such as a cookery book or other highly illustrated title) and likely to be in full colour.
What if I already have a cover design?
No problem! I'm happy to do what you need and to liaise with your cover designer if you prefer. I would need to let them know the page count of your book so that the spine width can be correctly set according to your chosen printer's template.
What if I need changes later?
Again, no problem though additional fees may be incurred if there are significant changes after the agreed rounds of corrections. Generally two rounds of corrections are included for interior layouts, and three for cover design.
Do you offer rush services?
I do not offer rush services. I will offer a realistic schedule according to my availability and your desired publication date but some planning ahead is required. See 'How long will it take?' above.
Can you help with uploading files to printers/distributors?
It depends on whether access to your printer/distributor account is allowed. Usually, I can guide you through the process via a video call with screen sharing but I cannot do the uploading for you. With Kindle Direct Publishing (Amazon) in particular, the Ts & Cs forbid anyone else from accessing your account. BookVault does allow people other than the account holder to be added to help with uploading, ordering proof copies and other tasks.
